Backup codes and recovery

Generate and use backup codes for emergency account access.

Backup Codes

Backup codes are one-time use codes that let you access your accounts when your phone isn't available.

Generate Backup Codes

  1. Open AffirmID
  2. Go to SettingsSecurity
  3. Tap Backup Codes
  4. Authenticate with biometrics or PIN
  5. Tap Generate New Codes
  6. Save your codes securely

How Many Codes?

AffirmID generates 10 backup codes at a time. Each code:

  • Can only be used once
  • Is 16 characters long
  • Never expires until used

Where to Store Backup Codes

Recommended storage:

  • Password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, etc.)
  • Printed paper in a safe or lockbox
  • Encrypted file on a secure device

Avoid storing:

  • In your email
  • On sticky notes
  • In plain text files
  • Screenshots in your camera roll

Using a Backup Code

When you can't use your phone:

  1. On the login page, select Use backup code
  2. Enter one of your unused backup codes
  3. Complete the login
  4. That code is now invalidated

Regenerating Codes

When you're running low on codes:

  1. Go to SettingsSecurityBackup Codes
  2. Tap Generate New Codes
  3. Important: Previous codes are invalidated
  4. Save your new codes immediately

Best Practices

  • Generate backup codes before you need them
  • Store them in multiple secure locations
  • Check your remaining codes periodically
  • Regenerate if you've used more than 5
  • Never share backup codes with anyone
