Backup Codes
Backup codes are one-time use codes that let you access your accounts when your phone isn't available.
Generate Backup Codes
- Open AffirmID
- Go to Settings → Security
- Tap Backup Codes
- Authenticate with biometrics or PIN
- Tap Generate New Codes
- Save your codes securely
How Many Codes?
AffirmID generates 10 backup codes at a time. Each code:
- Can only be used once
- Is 16 characters long
- Never expires until used
Where to Store Backup Codes
Recommended storage:
- Password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, etc.)
- Printed paper in a safe or lockbox
- Encrypted file on a secure device
Avoid storing:
- In your email
- On sticky notes
- In plain text files
- Screenshots in your camera roll
Using a Backup Code
When you can't use your phone:
- On the login page, select Use backup code
- Enter one of your unused backup codes
- Complete the login
- That code is now invalidated
Regenerating Codes
When you're running low on codes:
- Go to Settings → Security → Backup Codes
- Tap Generate New Codes
- Important: Previous codes are invalidated
- Save your new codes immediately
Best Practices
- Generate backup codes before you need them
- Store them in multiple secure locations
- Check your remaining codes periodically
- Regenerate if you've used more than 5
- Never share backup codes with anyone
