Using push notifications for login

Step-by-step guide to approving login requests with push notifications.

Approve Logins with Push

Push notifications make authentication fast and secure. Here's how to use them effectively.

Responding to a Push Request

When you see a push notification:

  1. Review the details - Check the service, location, and device
  2. Verify it's you - Make sure you initiated this login
  3. Tap the notification to open AffirmID
  4. Approve or Deny the request

Quick Approval

For even faster authentication:

  • From the notification - Some devices let you approve directly from the notification banner
  • With biometrics - Enable Face ID or fingerprint to approve with one gesture
  • Apple Watch - Approve requests from your wrist

Number Matching

For extra security, some services use number matching:

  1. The login screen shows a 2-digit number
  2. Your push notification shows three numbers
  3. Tap the number that matches
  4. This prevents attackers from social engineering approvals

What to Do If You Didn't Request It

If you receive a push notification you didn't initiate:

  1. Tap Deny immediately
  2. Change your password on that service
  3. Check for unauthorized access in your account's security settings
  4. Report the incident to your IT team or the service provider

Best Practices

  • Always verify the location matches where you are
  • Be suspicious of requests at unusual times
  • Never approve a request someone asks you to approve
  • Enable number matching when available
